Much of Bangkok's city life is based around its network of twenty canals, or klongs. Older, stilted wooden buildings are gradually being abandoned as families move into smaller concrete habs. The canals are highly polluted, nobody goes swimming as bacterial infections are common, and they are generally considered too dangerous for anything other than public transport.
