99) E.B. White, Charlotte's Web, 1952   ( RECOMMENDED BY BENJI )
I read so little children's and YA fiction and I've long known it's a gap I really ought to fill, so while Benji's recommendation was welcome I really didn't know what a treat I was in for. The unusual story of a spider who has to save the life of a pig is so damn clever in how it engages the imagination, and with such economy and intelligence, that it's easy to understand how it's become such a children's classic. The penultimate sentence also makes me wonder if it was also written by White in homage to a writer friend. Another of those books that will probably alter the course of my reading.
