Miles-blogging #31

Miles is 2 years and 4 months old today. It's been a productive month, developmentally: he can now count to ten in both English and Thai, although this knowledge of numbers doesn't yet translate into actual counting. Put three apples in front of him and ask him how many, and he'll still say "two apples" – 'two' still functions as 'everything more than one', and trying to get him to use some deduction to say "three apples" is still a bit beyond him. He's also quickly progressing from doing the simplest jigsaw puzzles (say, a small picture of three or four pieces) into wanting to tackle something a bit larger, although he'll need to get over his tendency to give up and quickly find something simpler to do when he can't figure something out, even with some help.
Usually this diversion ends up with a football or tennis ball, being kicked or batted between the two of us across the living room floor. His co-ordination is brilliant to watch whether he's kicking or hitting it with a big racket. Earlier this month he also began to catch things, something else he previously couldn't figure out how to do, and I expect soon he'll be trying to catch with one hand.
His cartoon addiction has taken a few more turns, adding the Korean animations Pororo and Bernard the Bear to his list of "stuff I have to watch every day". One interesting thing came out of an episode of Bernard the Bear, in which Bernard's car gets stuck on a level crossing and it gets hit by a train (without him in it, of course): unexpectedly, Miles went on to re-enact the whole scene using his big yellow car and a small Thomas the Tank Engine train, including the bits where Bernard panics and Miles jumps around as if not knowing what to do. Methinks there may yet be a thespian luvvie in him.
