Old news I know, but as I've been in the US the last few days I have no idea if this made any headline in the UK. On last night's flight I saw this obituary in yesterday's Guardian. John Barron died on July 3rd, age 83.

I am sad.

C.J. was for me one the most memorable and funniest characters I ever saw on television. I must have religiously watched every episode of The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin at least four times, and along with Python that show left an indelible mark on my sense of humour.

In the obit I was surprised by more details about Barron's acting career: pleased to see he'd done more than his fair share of TV science fiction (well, he somehow had to match Leonard Rossiter's appearance in 2001), and baffled by his making of a propaganda film for Saddam Hussein during the Iran/Iraq war of 1980-81.

I wonder if it will ever surface over here. Who cares. Long live C.J.
