I've been abroad and have neither seen the sun nor been on the internet nor been able to check e-mail for 4 days. My e-mail provider has now incorporated an unreliable 'type the following line of random letters' box into its webmail access page, and no matter if everything is dead right I invariably get their 'error' message which means I can't get at my mail; now I also discover Outlook Express can't connect to any of my mailboxes from home.

I know there's important stuff there I need to see but at the moment I have no way of getting at it. If you're waiting to hear from me this is why, and I shall be venting my frustration on the phone to them tomorrow morning but have no way of knowing when things will be fixed.

I can set you up with Webmail on the SFPoD /sflink machine.

We can either forward mail from your old setup if that is allowed or "fetchmail" it from your existing ISP.

[livejournal.com profile] vicarage already uses that since moving to the states.

Sounds good, thanks. I'll need to enquire tomorrow morning if they can allow fetchmail before I bugger up their system even further, if they can't sort the problem immediately.

Have you tried http://mail2web.com as a short term measure?

That was very useful thanks, I wasn't aware of that facility. I couldn't get at the larger stuff with attachments (probably becuase of this ancient version of Netscape) but it's certainly very handy short-term.

fetchmail just accesses a normal mailbox through the POP protocol. If they allow that then fetchmail will work.

It worked with mail2web so let's give it a go. Macunlimited are already aware of the problems and expect to have it fixed by tomorrow.

Pete, have you considered gmail or Yahoo? And how about Mozilla Firefox? I'm pretty sure it works on Macs and I've never looked back at IE since I installed it on my Windoze Box.

Oh yes...I guess this explains why you never responded to my "oh raptuous joy, the book you asked me to order for you arrived and you'll have to fight me for it, because it is totally nifty" e-mail!

Outlook Express works fine for my e-mail on this pre-OSX Mac, even if it is so 20th Century. My unreliable Netscape browser is the main hassle. The best long term solution would be to upgrade to a G5 desktop with everything bundled, but then I'll also need a new laserprinter and probably a new scanner too.

E-mail is OK now, for the moment...
