Most unfair of you ... I was wondering why Radio 4 hadn't collapsed under the weight of serious music.

I can't believe so many people can cheerfully contemplate Dick Cheney being President!

Yeah, it's definitely a good news-bad news sort of joke.

That would not be a cheerful contemplation as far as I am concerned, not at all.

But how far down the Presidential line of succession would we have to go before getting to someone we (whoever we are) would consider acceptable. This is the current order of succession according to Wikipedia. Personally I would not want Cheney, Hastert or Stevens. How would Condi act if Bush and Cheney weren't around? Certainly don't want Rumsfeld.
1. Vice President (Dick Cheney)
2. Speaker of the House of Representatives (J. Dennis Hastert)
3. President pro tempore of the Senate (Ted Stevens)
4. Secretary of State (Condoleezza Rice)
5. Secretary of the Treasury (John W. Snow)
6. Secretary of Defense (Donald H. Rumsfeld)
7. Attorney General (Alberto Gonzales)
8. Secretary of the Interior (Gale Norton)
9. Secretary of Agriculture (Mike Johanns)
10. Secretary of Commerce (Carlos Gutierrez, ineligible)
11. Secretary of Labor (Elaine Chao, ineligible)
12. Secretary of Health and Human Services (Michael Leavitt)
13. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (Alphonso Jackson)
14. Secretary of Transportation (Norman Y. Mineta)
15. Secretary of Energy (Samuel W. Bodman)
16. Secretary of Education (Margaret Spellings)
17. Secretary of Veterans Affairs (Jim Nicholson)

It's not an order of succession, it's a life-insurance plan!

Or maybe Dick and Dubya could head out with Mr. "accidents can and do happen" Whittington, Esq.?

I must admit, I was certain when I clicked through that the deceased would be some item of shrubbery.
