1) Patrick Leigh Fermor, A Time to Keep Silence, 1957
Fermor explored Trappist and other monastic sects by staying in their monasteries as part of a slight but indulgent travelogue. He doesn't share the experiences well with the reader, instead trying to blind us with the cold depths of his own observation and historical research. There are better books on the hermetic tradition than this.
