4) Leonardo Sciascia, The Day of the Owl, 1961
Reputedly one of the best and briefest fictional explanations of how the Mafia maintains its invisibility, it shows a small Sicilian town forced by fear to close ranks after a murder, in a way that preserves their murderous status quo in the face of a police investigation. Certainly impressive, though often impenetrable in parts.
