Rapleaf have now made a long public apology, and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] nhw for the heads-up. Their apology contains:

"It is humbling being wrong, and we’ve been wrong a lot at Rapleaf."

Reposting my comment on Nick's journal here: their apology is that of a company that admits to being consistently "stupid" and are desperately trying not to be even more stupid and offensive, which they also admit is very probable. How they honestly expect anyone to have any confidence in them as a business is completely baffling.

My details have now been removed. Inevitable schadenfreude: I think the term "Rapeleaf" will stick.

I was joking about how they had decided not to go the Google route, and wait 'til their market value was in umpteen digits before abandoning the motto "Don't Be Evil", but just be evil from the get-go.

Then I noticed that they do have a "Don't Be Evil" motto at the bottoms of their email profile pages: "It's more profitable to be ethical" (!)

I got a very apologetic email from them about seven hours after registering my complaint.

Just think: that was seven hours of dealing with thousands of other angry people just like us, before they got round to you. I hope this keep up and that eventually they'll all hate going to work in the morning so much that they give up the whole thing as a Very Bad Idea.

What about upscoop?

I opted out of rapleaf. I also rec'd the nicely apologetic letter. I confirmed, via rapleaf.com, that my information appeared to have been removed. BUT, my information is still being pulled and displayed with UPSCOOP searches ...

I think because they're basically the same company they're able to share e-mails, and who knows whether or not they're actually deleting all their info about us or just conveniently removing it from public view? I think they're now widely being perceived as having borderline legitimacy, ie. Don't Go There, Leave Well Alone, FOAD.
