...a meteorite. One (astronomy) report I read indicated that a hole that size wouuld be from something 1 kiloton in size. That would make quite a "bump" and should have been registered by the same sensors that detect earthquakes and the like. Nothing like that was registered.
Alternative theories? One I saw floated was a kind of volcanic event, with an emission of gas making the villagers sick.
