Emma Clarke, owner of the lovely 'Mind the Gap' voice on the London Underground, has been quoted out of context then sacked by LU for allegedly saying she did not use the Tube because it was "dreadful": "What I actually said was that travelling in a Tube train would be dreadful for me, listening to my own voice and seeing the haunted faces of commuters being subjected to me telling them to 'mind the gap'."

If you've never heard her, or even if you hear her every day, check out some spoof Tube announcements she's made for her own website.

If she's responsible for "Mahley-beaune", then maybe some good can come of the affair. They can get a Billy Piper soundalike in to say it proper: "Marrily-bun", innit?

That and the spoof announcements have all made it on today's news here. On her comment - the woman who does the announcements here was quoted a couple of years ago as saying she frequently is recognised from her voice when she travels on the trains in Melbourne - most often by blind people, who probably pay more attention. She found it quite sweet, but I could also see it being intimidating under some circumstances.
