5) Ward Moore, Lot & Lot's Daughter, 1953-54   (RE-READ)
Two of Moore's most famous stories that later became the film Panic in Year Zero. The post-Apocalyptic theme is based on the biblical Sodom, as David Jimmon realises his wife and kids are little more than parasites he must somehow shake off after Los Angeles is destroyed in a nuclear attack. One rarely encounters a character like this as a story's main protagonist, which makes the experience all the more memorable as Moore's style both reflects and illuminates Jimmon's savage thought processes. Unforgettable.
