over Afghanistan

This aerial photo of mountains and valleys in Afghanistan (best viewed larger, definitely), which I sent to Getty Images in May, has just been licensed. By what company I don't exactly know, as the royalty statement only says "David Lim, New York". Getty sold it as a 'royalty free' image as opposed to 'rights managed'; they got $229 dollars for it of which I get $46, as my percentage on royalty free images is a mere 20%. But I still don't get paid yet: I'm still $4 short of Getty's minimum payment level of $50. I'll also just have to imagine how it's being used... a double page background spread in Time or National Geographic would be cool... though if that's the case I'd like rather more than $46 for it...

That doesn't seem a very good deal!

I've noticed some photobloggers using fotomoto, which I find an interesting approach. (Though it's for photos to go on people's walls - not for in magazines and such.) From the buyer's POV, they get a choice of different sized photos on different papers, with the larger sizes in some cases being limited editions. (The photographer's choice, I assume.)

The downside I guess is attracting a large enough following to get people buying.

Thanks for that, it looks very useful and no doubt I'll explore it more. I also have an account at ImageKind (http://www.imagekind.com/MemberProfile.aspx?MID=806bc8eb-ba31-48f7-a05f-1e62abb36c50) which does much the same thing (and it's linked to Flickr so it's easy to manage), but I haven't done much with it yet!

I just like the simplicity of fotomoto. Just click on the photo's Buy a Print button and you can add it to a shopping cart without needing to leave the blog or wherever the picture is. I first noticed it here.

I also like that it encourages photographers not to undervalue their work! And the limited-edition option is a good idea.

I found your 'gatekeeper' photo on Flickr, but couldn't see any link from there to its listing in ImageKind. Does ImageKind just use Flickr for hosting, or am I missing something?
