A few people on my FL are doing a 100 Movie Challenge for 2010 (or variations thereof), so. Why not.

1) Man on the Moon, 1999, USA   DIRECTED BY MILOS FORMAN
Never a fan of Jim Carrey, I approached this one with trepidation but came out the other end with a much-raised level of respect for his acting. I think he's said this was one of his most demanding film roles and it's not surprising, it must have been very exacting conveying the ambivalence and complexity of Andy Kaufman's personality and humour. On this side of the Atlantic we were never privy to the antics of Kaufman, only ever having seen him in Taxi, so it was fascinating to see how minor that series was in his wider career.

I guess I was lucky that I was growing up in the US at the time when Andy was on Saturday Night Live, Taxi etc. and so about the only thing I didn't recognise was the wrestling career ... the rest of it was, as far as my memory can tell, *exactly right*.

When Jim Carey does a real acting role, like this, Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc. he shows what a great actor he can be ... but those are momentary blips in a far too manic career.

The presence of many of Kaufman's former colleagues also added a sense of it being "sanctioned".

This. I don't like Carey's comedy much at all though Cable Guy isn't bad. I generally find his serious roles much better and this is probably his best to date.

Of course, I've made it harder for myself by only counting movies I see at the cinema. Still, I'm already up to 22.

I honestly don't expect I'll make 100, but I'm including short films and made-for-TV as well. Even so, I'm only up to about 10 so far.
