Where eagerness to avoid error leads to error: "If you think that, you've got another thing coming." Explained, more or less, with no reference to its deliberately ungrammatical joke. Admit it, you've been wrong all these years.
Er, no... I've always said, "...another think coming." I picked up the phrase from my Dad. Possibly the reason we had it right was that in a Manchester accent, "thing" and "think" sound more different than in other English accents. Anyway, the phrase only makes sense if "think" is repeated.
I've always said "think" and have had several rounds with brothers and sisters who still all say "thing", such that my pedantry on this has become a bit of a family joke. Maybe it's time for an LJ poll...
