'The Diver' by Storm Thorgerson. In case you were wondering where you've seen Mono Lake before.

I think I drove past it myself back in the '90s... isn't it near Lake Tahoe?

Mono Lake from space: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=8388

Mono Lake Park in Google Maps. Zoom in and you can see several white objects along the shoreline to the north of the path. They are tufa towers. They used to be underwater but the shoreline receded.

You would like Storm Over Mono by John Hart. I've gone hiking with John and he is very smart, friendly, and pleasant to be around. These qualities served him very well when he was writing the book because he was able to get people on all sides of the battle to open up and talk to him. Also, it's one of the most amazing and inspiring stories in the history of conservation. And it's beautifully written.

Extraordinary place. Alkali flies. Unique. Nothing like them anywhere else, even if they don't run off an arsenic metabolism.

Fluff played the whole thing on his show, uninterrupted, when it first came out; one of the better unexpected non-Peel radio experiences I've had in my life.
