Miles-blogging #19

Miles is sixteen months old today. We brought him over to England for the fourth time a few weeks ago, and he's now been to Hamleys, the 250-year old London toy store, which he loved. We also took him to Legoland in Windsor, where he had a particularly good time in Duploland, but growing up in a warm climate he doesn't enjoy himself nearly so much when it's cold outside, and he's yet to experience snow.
Otherwise it's been a quiet month. He generally flies well and has fun on aeroplanes but he's already too big to fit comfortably in an aeroplane's bassinet, which is designed for kids up to eighteen months – and he now weighs 12 kilos, which is big for his age. He has eight teeth and the Mongolian Spot on his lower back seems to be fading a little – some mixed race kids keep it well into their teens.
His vocabulary is getting bigger day by day: 'coconut', 'chair' (which he says perfectly), 'daddy' (still no 'mummy'), 'car', 'hair', various random nouns he can handle. He hasn't yet put two words together, but he's using descriptive words properly too – 'dark', 'purple', 'hot', 'gone' – and he's also saying a few more Thai words such as 'cháng' for elephant, although I don't think he yet understands that he's using two very different languages. I also had my first small conversation with him two weeks ago on Skype: seeing his hair was wet, I asked "Miles, have you had a shower?" He nodded, said "Yeah," and pointed to the bathroom. This seems like such a small thing, but it's the first time I can recall him using language and gesture together to both indicate comprehension and reply to something said to him. He communicates enthusiastically and says the right words all the time if I point at something and ask him what it is, but this certainly felt different.
