It's no big deal, but the question is not actually whether Jared Loughner's mug-shot was doctored to make him appear more sinister, but by how much, by whom and how quickly? Most obviously there's the Joker-slash added to the corner of his mouth (achieved by 'smudging'), the obvious black cut-out around his shirt, and the darkening around his eyes to add more depth to his eye sockets (done by 'burning'). I remember the OJ case, when both major American newsmagazines put the alleged perp on the cover, but one darkened him several shades.

Interesting. I hadn't heard about the photo manipulation. I thought he must have had a black eye or something from the photo released, because otherwise the lighting didn't make sense, but it didn't occur to me that it had been altered.
