It's 5.30 am in San Francisco, on my hotel room's ethernet connection. Yesterday's post-flight wind-down involved going to Borders where I couldn't resist getting Lost In Space, the new Season 1 DVD box set, that is.

When in SF I usually haunt the excellent science fiction specialists Borderlands Books, and at the other side of town (and the other side of my head) the famous 'beat generation' bookstore and intellectual mecca City Lights, where even complete outsiders like me can still go 'looking for Jack'.

But all that's for tomorrow. Today's LJ-approved excitement will involve taking the BART to Berkeley, where on the recommendation of [livejournal.com profile] sbisson I will be checking out Amoeba Music and parting with far too much money, and also [livejournal.com profile] del_c's SF bookshop recommendation The Other Change of Hobbit, where by then I will probably have to resort to plastic.

Just out of curiosity, do you ever catch up with any of the locals when you're in SF?

If you mean local fans, Robert Lichtman and I have talked occasionally about hooking up, but it would be a journey into the city for him. Another fan called Kristopher Merrill-Travis also lives in SF (Berkeley, I think), and if I was more organised I'd have mailed him. Anyone else you know here?

you know there's the original and huge Ameoba on Haight Street jsut before you get to the end of the road and see Golden Gate Park in front of you? Three's also an Ameoba in Los Angeles where Sean Astin shops. But Berkeley is always worth a visit - check out the Hot Tub place! And there's Cody's bookshop which is neat. And great places to eat. Time I went back ;-) Enjoy!

During one hurried trip through San Fran, I visited City Lights but was not impressed. I missed getting to "Other Change", I'd love to browse there!

There were a couple of good gaming stores in SF, you could have gotten those M.A.R. Barker books there.

"Resort to plastic"! Hah!

David Clark sending me every new edition of his contact list for the Bay Area. For some reason I can't find the latest one. When I do though I'll send it to you.
