Miles @ 2 years

Miles was two years and one month old a couple of days ago – that's right, he's hit his first quarter-century of calendar months. Here he is taking a well-earned break from running his fleet of 23 cars, 7 diggers, 5 tractors, 3 trains, 2 boats, 2 scooters, 1 bike and 1 London Routemaster Bus.

One advantage of having more toys than any other kid in the country is that he learns to combine them imaginatively: he tries to use his biggest digger to pick up a smaller one, or make a "train" of toy cars to see if he can get it moving in a straight line by pushing it from the back. Lately he also likes to rearrange his teddy bears and other soft toys all around him to build, in his head, a house or a boat. But he takes more pride in his collection of diggers than any other of kind of toy, and we rarely leave a 7-11 without spending a hundred baht on yet another cheap one when he spots it on the shelves and takes it to the cashier all by himself. It's for precisely this reason we have now sworn to visit Toys R Us approximately once every five years.

One little leap this month has been his learning to try out questions: "Where's grandad gone?", "Where's Miles' milk?" He's modelling these on things we ask him and has realised he can do it for himself too. He hasn't got round to using that most important interrogative yet – "Why?" – but I'll happily defer that a bit longer before we get to the inevitable and completely inexplicable stuff like "Dad, why is that car blue?" and "Dad, why is your hair grey?"

It certainly has. That's awesome, and I'm now embarassed!

Permission to turn that into an LJ icon? If you were to resize it to 100x100 I'd be incredibly grateful, but if you don't have the time then I shall do it myself!

I like reading your posts about Miles because it makes me think of Felipe, my nephew in Brasil who is of the same age (and who also has a fleet of cars.) I'm thinking of buying Felipe a musical instrument - xylophone - because there's none in his house. Does Miles have any?

Yes he does, and a small colourful xylophone is probably his favourite of them. Go for it!
