Have just received personally-addressed junk mail from [livejournal.com profile] michaelhoward, leader of the British Conservative Party, urging me in that irritatingly bombastic voice of his to vote Tory in the various elections on 10 June, and also if I would be so kind as to donate all my money - that Labour's tax hikes haven't relieved me of - to his cause.

As much as I've been saying for several years that what this Government needs most is an effective opposition (the Mail and Express can please shut up now), I rather think Michael Howard's vague promises will be falling on the deaf ears of those who haven't shifted from the political leanings they formed while growing up in Thatcher's Britain.

Howard was also kind enough to include a reply-paid envelope, one of my favourite tools of non-violent protest. Foolish man. Tearing it all up and returning everything at their expense is rather cathartic. He can recycle his own junk mail, thanks.

Why hasn't he written to me yet? I feel really deprived! I'm assuming we don't have any election thingies happening here, but it would be so typical of Howard to be out there running around after everyone but his own constituents, especially the urban ones who he knows won't vote for him.

I went leafleting for the Lib Dems on Monday. It was, believe me, a pleasure to take my turn at knocking a brick out of the mighty constituency edifice. I had a smile on my face and my heart was light.

He wrote a very nice letter to me as well, and only spoiled it by addressing it to Mrs, something which apparently happened to a large number of single women round here.

I wonder if I've got anything flat and heavy to put in the reply envelope.

Ooo! Did you know that you don't need to use the reply-paid envelope? The freepost code is enough to guarantee the Tory Party have to pay for it... (I think: this would merit research).

You could send him an old telephone directory. With a note suggesting that some of them are probably Tory voters.

Hearing about Desmond's Nazi rant (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3651421.stm) this morning on Today gave us a perfect example of the xenophobic nutters that run right-wing national newspapers. It would almost be funny if it wasn't also scary.

I'm surprised that the Telegraph people even noticed Desmond's language: after all, when it comes to xenophobic rants, they practically own the copyright!
