Waugh - wish they'd get it together to send the invitations out more than a week before the event. We had to politely decline as the air fare would've been silly at that point - it might even have been as expensive as the train.

Normally, we do have our act together and the invitations go out in good time.

You may not be aware that the Science Museum showed us the door in January, and that Rocket Publications pulled most of our funding. It's taken a long time to find a venue we could afford that was acceptable for the ceremony. We found it literally just a month ago.

We got the invitations out as soon as humanly possible after that. That the Post Office then took it upon themselves to deliver things when they felt like if, if indeed they did feel like it, just added to the panic.

Rest assured that next year the invitatations will be going out in sufficient time to allow for planning and indeed for the PO to have its fun too.

The last couple of years, the Post Office has decided to deliver our invitations about a week before the event. We'd really like to go, honest, but travel has to be organised.

The sweet point for air fares seems to be six weeks before travel. Sensible train fares require (at least) three months' warning on GNER!

I can't guarantee to have the invitations sent out three months in advance (too many people would forget, to be honest), but now we have a venue that we can book properly in advance, we can at least advertise the firm date much sooner. I'm aiming to have the invitations out no later than eight weeks before the event, and I'm seriously thinking about emailing them if people are interested, as the post is becoming a joke. I know the invitations went out a lot sooner last year.

Rest assured you will remain on the guest list.

The train thing was more to point out how silly the railways have become - they seem to think they have a monopoly, and have failed to notice that their competition is, in fact, the low-cost airlines.

E-mail would be good, even if it's just to say "expect your invitation in the post, this is to let you know the date if you have to organise travel.

Someone did actually demand that we send the invites out three months in advance. From your comment, I finally figured out why.

After this year's experiences, I am definitely looking into ways of disseminating information other than through the post, and email early warning would be a good thing, I think.

The Clarke Award has a website – www.clarkeaward.com – which disseminates information. But for my purposes that would be slightly problematic; it would rely on people thinking to check the website, and the ceremony is anyway not a come-all-ye. A private emailshot is probably going to achieve the result I need ... but I have time to figure out other possibilities too.
