With all the news on TV lately about the extreme weather conditions affecting the East Coast of the US, the mud slides in the Middle East and South America, along with the dire predictions made by such films as The Day After Tomorrow, we shouldn't forget that England has its share of devastating weather too.

Under the cut is a photo illustrating the damage caused to a friend's home from the storm that passed through Southern England last week. It really makes you cherish what you have, and reminds us not to take things for granted.

What's your friend's email address? I can donate via PayPal if it will ease his/her pain :o)

Could we organise some sort of clean-up party? I'd be happy to help and I'm sure they'd be grateful.

I myself lost the heads from a number of cherised flowers.

We all feel your friend's pain. We were very lucky that our barbecue was on Sunday instead of Saturday, which would have been a complete wash-out. I am keeping a close eye on satellite photos for fear of wandering into one of those "instant freezing" storms in the movie.

There's been freakish weather on the east coast of the US? Seems like a typical summer to me: Hot, cool, cold, rain, clouds, haze, etc.

cool, cold, rain, clouds, haze, etc.

That's a British summer, not Merkin summer. But then I was in Washington last week, so that might explain it.

The one that rained off Wimbledon, for all I know.

Which one would that be? There seemed to be rain every day.

Probably the one interpolated seamlessly between the assorted rain showers and gales ...

I'd hate to be a dustbin ... in Shaftesbury ... tonight!
