The Inland Revenue have just unexpectedly sent me a cheque for very nearly £2,300, with an apologetic letter saying I've been overpaying tax on my one source of income. (Solution: give me the right tax code, then). Still, good to know my anonymous tax inspector has realised that until now this has all been a selfish one-way relationship, realised the error of his ways and decided to make suitable ammends. Thank you, sir.

So before they say it's all been a dreadful mistake and ask for it back, who/what can I spend it on? Suggestions please.

Agree. Already have the 15-inch and love it to bits.

Alas, the 30" display won't work with the PowerBook, as it needs a dual-headed DVI graphics card.

The 23" would fit available space, just. I may have to tool up and go shopping next week...

Congratulations! I have no idea what you should spend it on other than that it should be entirely self-indulgent. :)

If I was half-way sensible I'd put it towards paying off the mortgage or some home improvements, but that's not Plan A at the moment...

I would say "an exotic holiday" but possibly not ideal for you...

Nor me, mate. I wouldn't go back to India if you paid me ten million quid, I must have been out of my bloody head. I say he gives him and his mates a good night out at Spearmint Rhino then gives what's left to the British National Party. Bloody taxman's had enough of my money.

When this sort of thing happens to me I just put the money in the bank for next time the IR fucks up the other way and asks for more money than they should do.....

Mind you if you are only paying PAYE then you probably don't notice that problem.

As it's PAYE I'd never notice it until they tell me. At least they've decided I've overpaid rather than underpaid, but I'd rather have had that money in my account earning interest, and with the right tax code. Remains to be seen if they'll now change it.

Go on holiday by train. And stay in a luxury hotel. Enjoy having other people look after you and indulge your whims.
