In brief: a major balls-up courtesy of my employer, who I discover has not given me the November leave I asked for despite having applied for it three months ago (It doesn't seem to matter if you've worked for this company for the best part of twenty years, over the last three years to get the leave you need has become next to impossible courtesy of BA's famously crap forward-planning).

So as it stands, unless I can get this totally arse situation sorted (which previous experience tells me I should doubt), my Novacon attendance will now be limited to Sunday 7th, and only because I will have driven straight to Birmingham from Heathrow when I land on the Sunday morning. I will then have to dose up on Red Bull just to stay awake for the rest of the day, my jet-lag roughly equating everyone else's hangover.

RedBull and driving does not mix. I know. I do it too often.

Extra-strong coffee then. Sorry, I'm spitting feathers right now. Tun on Thursday?

I will be at the Ton for some of Thursday - but it is quite small nowadays and the Worldcon made it ridiculously small. I may just turn up, and then go for a meal. Any recommendations?

I don't know any restaurants around Waterloo so if I eat out I'll be following everyone else. But I do have a bunch of fanzines to pass on so I'll probably stick around 'til around 10pm.

They'd probably say "Oh, tell me about it..."

Congrats to you both, BTW, and sorry I couldn't make it (was 4,000 miles away, as predicted). But the pics are providing at least a vicarious pleasure...

I'm so sorry. You will be missed dreadfully - I won't be the only one who was looking forward to getting some quality time with you, for sure. Good luck with sorting the situation.

Stupid BA.

But you'll be there to collect your Nova, yes?

As I said to [livejournal.com profile] vicarage, I doubt the SMOFs would allow that...

Was going to suggest you hijack the plane and fly it to Novacon but then it occured to me that this might compromise future applications for leave. Hmm, guess they might even dock your pay for hijacking a plane. So I guess it's bad luck old chap and if it's any consolation just remember that in some countries they don't have a Novacon at all.

P.S. I don't suppose work is taking you to Spain that weekend? It would seem an appropriate destination given, or so I'm told, that in Spanish nova means, 'doesn't go'. . .

Arse. Sorry to hear that. Have you talked to the union?

Selfish bit: Alex, are you still looking for a roomshare for Novacon? because my roommate just got screwed over by his employers.

Um, ah, well no - I found a sharer - so long as the paperwork goes through ok. (He was joining at the same time as booking the room so I hope that it all works ok)

If it helps work here hasn't confirmed that I can take that weekend off - I've requested it (and a half day on the Friday) but received no response.

We sort of have a deadline the week afterwards - but I don't think I am needed for weekend work (crossing fingers).

Bummer - MS screwed up Novacon for me by scheduling a meeting. Still it does me I'll get to go to a Vanguard meeting.

Bum. Sorry you won't be there for all the con Pete but I have a sort of similar situation. I've now started booking up leave three years in advance for Novacons. It's a pity I can't do the same for Easter & Summer leave.

Blast! That's terrible.

My company fouled up my Christmas plans last year, and looks to be doing it again. I only put in my request in December. Last December, for this year.

Best of luck getting things sorted.

V. belated thanks, by the way, for your wonderful most recent edition ... and the gorgeous stamps with which it was mailed! A very enjoyable read.

Have tried to sort it, but because the work schedule has been allocated over that time they now won't change it unless it's for something like a family emergency. Looks like I've fallen foul of the system this time around. :-(
