Dubai

Turns out this midnight view of a fairground in Dubai, taken from a hotel room, was blogged way back in January 2008 over at Dubai Pictures. Not that I object, but I'm curious to know if it's possible to find out how many more have been blogged via Flickr without me knowing.

I generally browse the Flickr stats each day to see what links people are following to get to my pics. That means I get to see quite a few instances of my pics being blogged. Frustratingly, I have a one that has just been picked up by a German website that is completely locked, so I have no idea what/who/why it is. I am surprised, however, by how many people tell me or ask permission before they use the photos, even though I have them on a CC licence that allows all non-commercial usage.

Interesting! Where on Flickr are these daily stats situated?

There's a 'your stats' option on the 'you' menu (below 'your favourites' and above 'recent activity'). They brought in the option about 12 months ago (?), but it was then, maybe still is, something you have to opt into.

I check stats every day too, for just this sort of thing. Few people ask me first, though!

Might it be searchable on advanced Google? Linkedto:??

I use a creative commons but say, let me know you've used it. Few do. I'd say it's only polite.

What's Linkedto:? I've looked at Linkedin but that's more of a business relationship thingy.

It seems there used to be something called FlickrInspector which featured search engines for detecting images on blogs, but that App is no more. If Flickr can notify me when a photo is commented on or faved, why not also when someone hits the 'Blog This' button?

Meanwhile, I've discovered a 3rd Party App at BigHugeLabs as part of their DNA (http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/dna.php) page. Enter your Flickr name, then at the bottom of the resulting screen under 'ego surf' is a list of blog search engines that will track your photos. I've found a few this way I was already aware of, but others I know are out there don't appear, so it's incomplete. Maybe the only sure way at the moment is to look at referrer stats for every individual photo.

I was trying remember ways of using Google search to look for links to your photo e.g. the string <img src="www.flick/drasecretcampus/####"> in code of websites. It was certainly possible to find websites that linked to a particular page - and either AltaVista or Google could find them by typing something like "linkedto: url" in the standard query box.

Do you have any images of Oslo, Norway?

Sorry, no... I only ever passed through the airport once in ’86. Why?

I need a good "iconic" image of Oslo (preferably of one of the buildings there) to use on the cover of a conference book. I have several of the National Theater but they aren't ideal (e.g., one has a electric power line in the foreground). I asked my contacts in Oslo to send me some photos, but I don't think they are tuned in to exactly what I'm looking for.
