...that's a quote from Ray Bradbury, who has been singing the praises of Long Beach's Acres of Books for more than fifty years. It truly is a huge labyrinthine warehouse where anyone with diverse literary interests could easily spend a whole day, so I have done my usual secondhand-bookshop-thing by spending many hours and several tens of dollars on SF first editions.

On the flight over here I was looking after one Roland Emmerich. A rather taciturn guy, I found, and not too forthcoming when I hinted at my rather high approval of The Day After Tomorrow. Much more fun to be around was Jamelia, who is much younger than her voice and pictures would have you believe. I don't know her music but at least we got to talk about Macs.

Meanwhile, here's the usual boring view from the hotel window, plus four more...

Long Beach, Los Angeles, 21 November 2004

The Quality Hotel, Bentley, Walsall (the venue for Novacon), 8 November 2004

Sydney, New South Wales, 2 November 2004

New York, 26 September 2004

Are those eucalypts in the background of the Cape Town hotel?

And Richard Harland says "Yes, I have copies.. pass on the email adress of said [livejournal.com profile] flyingsauce and things shall be accomplished forthwith."

(or something like)

So I have passed along your email.

Sure. Do you want the full size 3072 x 2048 pixel pic, or shall I scale it down for you (and to what size)?

I am not that good at figuring out what is best as far as pixel sizes are. I guess the I would like it to still have good quality but not take up so much space on the hard drive. My Computer screen is a 12inch if that helps.

I tried sending the pic to your munquie at livejournal address but it bounced, probably because of the attachment. What's your usual e-mail address?

Not a paying member

I don't get e-mail unless I pay for my live journal. :-(

My e-mail is munquie73@yahoo.co.uk

I was there at the end of my RTW trip. Where I bought 2 books I'd already got ...

I have to carry around a database with me now to stop myself from doing that.

My database was on a Palm who's batteries failed 2 days into the trip...

Ouch. The FileMaker database on my Palm has a maximum of 5000 entries, and there are about 7000 entries on my laptop datatbase. Effective synchronising has now become impossible so I expect I will have to break it down into smaller categories. Accomplishing all that will probably be a day's work.

Hello Mr. Flying Sauce, a friend of mine recommended your journal to me. I hope you don't mind me adding you.

Did you try on purpose to keep people out of the pictures?

Hello [livejournal.com profile] commonpeople, just noticed your post tagged on here. Sorry, I wasn't ignoring you, I've just had all sorts of e-mail and notification problems lately. Would that mutual friend be the lovely [livejournal.com profile] sneerpout, by any chance?

No, I don't try and keep people out of the pictures, it often just works out that way, especially when photographing from several floors up. Some of my favourite street-level pics are here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/flyingsauce/89418.html).

Yes, she did! I always try to say hello to people before adding them, but if I don't hear back I just assume that they are happy with their friends' list and don't wish to add any more.

I've only met her recently. Do you know her in person?

Yup. Through Brit SF fandom.

I have much to learn from the both of you then. I love SF but I'm still a bit of a beginner.
